MAMA is happy to announce the opening of their maternity waiting homes. Although already in use in other parts of Uganda these are the first two in Hoima district.
Waiting homes are for expectant mothers to come and wait in a designated area so they can receive care from a skilled birth attendant at delivery. Both waiting homes offer free accommodation and a designated cooking area close to our clinics.
Christmas 2017 saw the opening of our waiting home in Runga which was at the request of the local mothers coming for antenatal care from surrounding villages, approximately 10km radius around Runga.
These mothers have difficulty reaching our MAMA clinic due to weather or concerns about safety at night, which usually results in mothers delivering unattended at home. Mothers will start coming to us at the first signs of labour.
A few weeks later, our second waiting home (pictured) opened in Hoima Town, opposite Azur Clinic. This waiting home differs slightly to our Runga one in that it offers accommodation for women who have the potential need for a doctor or theatre either during or after delivery. For example, those mothers who require an elective caesarean section.
